ROWING

NORTH END CLUB. The semi-finals of the Closs-Wright four-oar club race were rowed by the North End Boating Club on Tuesday evening.* The course was from Ravensbourne wharf to tho entrance of the boat harbor —one mile 130yds. The first crews to take the water were F. Eggers (sir), J. Burrell, R. M'Farinne. H. Rodgers (bow), and P. y a llis (str), H. Livingstone, R. Clark,

E. 0. Reilly (how). With a, splendid, start and vigorous strokes, Eggers gained from half to three-quarters of a length on Vallis, and was still in the lead at Black Jack’s Point. Here Vallis. who had been setting a faster stroke, drew up ou Eggers, and the race was closely contested until about 200yds from the finish, when Vallis quickened up, and gradually drew away from his opponent, winning by a bare length. The fine finish of this race was marred by the two crews touching when Vallis was on the line, but as it made no difference to the result of the race Eggers did not claim the foul. The second race was rowed between D. Sutherland (str), E. Wilson, F. Vorrath, A. Wyman (bow) end G. Thomson (str), J. Mitchell, T. O’Shea, and C. Barton (bow). This race did not prove as exciting to the onlookers as the previous one. Both crews were sent away to a good start. Thomson’s crew drew away from Sutherland’s, and at the half-mile was a length and a-half in the lead. From Black Jack’s Point he quickened his stroke, and drew further away from Sutherland. Rowing 40 strokes to the minute, Thomson’s crew passed the winning post about six lengths ahead. In this race Sutherland’s crew did not row up to the form shown in the first heat. I A feature of the evening’s performance was tho work of the two coxswains—MTvay (who steered both winners) and Fox.
