SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

WATER POLO THIRD ROUND WELLINGTON DEFEATS CANTERBURY There were no heats of the New Zealand national swimming and diving championships decided this morning, but the third round of water polo commenced, Wellington (with whom Otago drew on Monday night) defeating Canterbuxy B by 8 goals to 3 after a good game. Wellington, who scored in the first minute of play, showed more combination and dash than Canterbury, the shrowing of the Wellington men, especially Claridge, who shot one goal at long range, being much better than that of Canterbury. Murrell and Claridge were outstanding in the Wellington team, H. 6. Smith and L. Moorhouse being about the pick of the Canterbury players, whose goalkeeper, though he began badly, made some great saves later in the game, and got his side out of difficulties time and again. Goals for Wellington were scored by Murrell (4), Claridge (2), Moilier, and Pelham, while for Canterbury goals were scored by Moorbouse (2) and H. G. Smith. The teams were:

Wellington.—Moilier, J. Cameron, R. Pelham, C. Claridge, H, Dickson, D. Murrell, and F. Ryan. Canterbury B.—H. G. Smith, C. W. Smith, L. Moorbouse, M. Rattray, C. R. Riordan, T. Laurie, and W. Sutherland TO-NIGHT'S PROGRAMME One of the most attractive programmes of the championship programme will be staged to-night, wnen three diving events are listed for competition. The final of the intermediate boys’ diving championship will be held, and the first stages (compulsory of the men’s and ladies’ national diving championships will take place. Both should produce rare competition, especially in the ladies’ event, in which there seems very little between Misses L. Hood, L. Copplestone, and Mrs T. W. Thompson. R. C. Calder (Otago) will defend his title in the men’s event. H. E. Walker (Otago) and W. Hicks (Wellington), ex-holders of the title, are also competing. In the 100,yds intermediate boys’ championship fast time is expected on the part of W. Cameron, of Wellington, while the 220yds men’s national breast-stroke championship should provide a good race. The junior girls’ 100yds championship and junior boys’ 220yds championship should he good races, while D. P. Lindsay will again be seen in action in the 880yds men’s national championship. Miss Ena Stockley, of Auckland, who until recently held the Australian 100yds back-stroke record, and is the holder of the New Zealand 100 metres record back-stroke, will attempt to lower the New Zealand record to-night. Two water polo matches will also be played.
