ACCIDENTS AND DEATHS

KNOCKED DOWN BY HORSE. | Knocked down by a bolting horse and cart at Green Lane, Auckland, Francis Carlton, single, aged 60 years, died at the Auckland Hospital yesterday afternoon five minutes after being admitted. The man was working on a footpath, when a horse bolted and knocked him down. ELDERLY SEAMAN KILLED. A fatality occurred at the Prince’s wharf, Auckland, yesterday afternoon, when an able seaman on the Union Steam Ship Company’s steamer Kanna, William Ogle, single, aged about sixty, fell into the water between the vessel and the wharf. Although he was rescued after he had been in the water for only two or three minutes, he was dead when examined by a doctor shortly afterwards. Ogle ■ signed on the ship’s articles in the morning. The vessel was preparing to leave for Noumea, Surprise, and Walpole Islands, and, in company with others of the crew, ho was loading stores when the accident occurred. Packages were being carried from the wharf to the poop without the aid of a gangway, and in stepping on to the wharf Ogle slipped and fell into the water. The chief officer and two others immediately climbed down to the water’s edge, and brought the man to the wharf. There were no marks on the body, and it is believed that death was due to shock. "PROBABLY IMPROPER FEEDING.” An inquest was held at Ohura yesterday (states a Taumarunui P.A. message) concerning the death of a Maori infant named Harry Howe, who died when his mother was taking him to a doctor. A verdict was returned that the evidence was insufficient to show the cause of death, which was probably due to improper feeding, FOUND DROWNED. A verdict of found drowned was returned by the coroner, following an inquest into the cause of death of Florence May Crawford, a married woman, of Havelock North, whose body was found on the Petanc Reach, about two miles from Napier. The deceased had been missing from her home since January 10. BROTHERS DROWNED. An inquest was held at Ohura yesterday before Mr A. S. Laird, as coroner, concerning the death of Gordon Jenks and Albert Jenks, two brothers, who lost their lives in a swimming pool near Ohura on Sunday afternoon. A verdict of accidental drowning was returned. No one witnessed the tragedy, but the boys were seen bathing in the pool alone prior to the discovery of their bodies.
