SANDERS CUP

CANTERBURY'S PROBLEM WHO WILL SEND BETTY TO STEWART ISLAND? [Special to the ‘Stab.’] CHRISTCHURCH. January 24. Who will send Betty to Stewart Island next month to defend the Sanders Cup for Canterbury? This is the latest problem yachtsmen of Canterbury are up against. From Wednesday, February 1, the Canterbury Yachting Association will be no more, and it is up to the sailing enthusiasts of the estuary to. raise the necessary money to send their boat and crew away! Meanwhile the challenges received from the other provinces are to be forwarded to Mr G. G. Andrews, owner of Betty, until something definite is decided upon. This decision is the outcome of a meeting of the Yachting Association held at Lyttelton to wind up the affairs in connection with the last contest, and to decide what was to be done in the future. When the question of sending a boat away to defend the cup was brought up Mr C. J. Trcleaven asked what the present position was. Had the clubs appointed new delegates to act on the association? ■ Mr M. Smith (Lyttelton) said that as far as the Canterbury Yacht and Motor Club was concerned there was no yachting association. His club, he said had no boat to challenge Betty’s right as defender, and therefore had not appointed delegates. Lyttelton as a club would therefore take no interest. However, h© thought that the yachtsmen of the port would be quite willing to help.
