SCRUB AND BUSH FIRES

[Per United Press Association.] NELSON, January 23. No serious damage, with the exception of the destruction of fifteen -acres of valuable scenic reserves at Lougford, on the Nelson-AlurcJ.vson road, was reported during the week-end. The Slate forest service gang nas the fire well in hand. Tho fire in tho Tophouse region is being tackled from the wings and the valley. The forestry officers report a considerable number of hush fires, caused by smouldering, abandoned collieries, some of which have been burning for over twenty years. AUCKLAND, January 23.

A fierce fire, which is raging over the hills between Kakapuaka and Waimuku, has destroyed some hundreds of acres of scrub and green bush and is rapidly approaching closer settlement in the Waikoukou Valley. The smoke is visible for miles round. The damage so far is confined to pastures arid fences, farmers having been able to remove their stock to safety.
