REPORTS. The Works Committee reported; The staff was engaged on the relaying of the 18in dram from the mouth of the railway culvert in Harbor terrace, Carey’s Bay. From beginning to end this work was carried out under extreme difficulties, chiefly owing to the very loose nature of the ground, which required to be heavily timbered, and the quantity of water encountered at the depth at which the men were working, the average depth of the trench being about 14ft. The new pipe line was laid with ISin concrete pipes, the distance being one chain 56ft, the pipes being laid on a bed of concrete and haunched up on each side with concrete. This should ensure an absolutely permanent job, and no further difficulty should be encountered in this section. The committee appreciate the manner in which the men carried out the arduous work entailed on the job, and recommend that a bonus of £1 be paid to each man who was employed on it during the duration of the work. The committee also thanks the foreman for the manner in which he supervised and overcame the many obstacles which the work presented. The total cost of the work amounts to £153 18s sd. In passing, mention is made that in laying the drain provision has been made for connecting all storm-water drains in the locality to the new drain, thus obviating the existing method of discharging them ever the bank. In order to allow for road widening operation at the corner where the Harbor Board’s old house is being removed the culvert there has been extended by adding three 18in concrete pipes, and will be further extended if necessary. The men employed by the Public Works Department in taking away bad points on Alacandrew road and on the Low road are making good progress, and advantage is being taken to obtain the spoil for road widening. It is proposed to straighten out the bad .bend in the road at the foot of Slant street, and also adjacent to Air M. Hill’s property at Deborah Bay by rebuilding a portion of the stone wall in a new position and filling in with'spoil. The committee has gone into the question of putting the lower end of George street in order, and is of opinion that the work should be done by contract. With this object in view and to bring the question to finality the committee asks for authority to spend up to an amount of £7OO on the work. _ On authority being given specifications will be drawn up and tenders called for the work. For some time the committee has been discussing the question of having a Government standard survey made of Alansford Town. The estimated cost of the survey to the council would be £144, and it is recommended that provision he made in the next year’s estimates for having this work canned out. As a great deal of IIIUO has been lost consequent upon tlu staff being employed for so long cm the drain at Carey’s Bay, the committee recommends that in order to pick up the work an additional six men lie taken on temporarily. The following additional works were carried out: — Three loads of rock were carted and spread in Bellevue place, eight loads of ashes were spread on lire Sawyers Bay footpath, the channels in Alount street and Ajax mad have been cleaned. One hundred loads of rock and twenty-two loads of blinding were carted and spread on the Low road, the material being obtained srom the points which the Public Works Department are removing. Thirty-five loads of clay were spread and blinded with sand on the footpath round the foreshore at Carey’s Bay! At the present time the men are chiefly employed on cleaning water tables and cutting grass on the Peninsula.—lt was recided to pay the Foreman a, bonus in respect to the drain at Alansford.—The improving of the south end of George street was approved after a lengthy discussion.— The council decided to offer £2O for sufficient ground to shift back the footpath to the width of the path on theextreme corner of George street.—The decision to obtain a standard survey of Mansford was carried.—The report was adopted as amended.

The. Gas and Water Committee reported:—The gas manager in his report states that everything has been working, satisfactorily at the gasworks during the jjasfc seven weeks. One of the retorts nas ben stopped with fire cement, and the other three require similar treatment right away. Authority has therefore been given to procure 3cwt of the necessary fire cement required to effect the repairs. The committee has given the further application by Miss Anderson for a water service serious consideration, but can only adhere its former decision on this matter. The committee has looked fully into the question of Mr Timlin’s account of £3 lor extras in connection with the Bellevue place water main. A report has been obtained from the foreman, and with the information available the committee recommends that the council accept no liability in the matter. The water officer having made application for lin hose, the committee recommends that three COft coils be purchased.—Several councillors complained of the gas supply, ■which they said was not satisfactory.— The Mayor said that users of gas should lodge complaints with the town clerk.—The report was adopted. The financial statement showed that for the past seven weeks the receipts totalled £4.267 16s lOd and the expenditure £BO2 Ss 6d.
