NOTES ON THE FLAY The most interesting game in the moruinc cm the St. Albans green uas that between Lomas and Rwlpath. The latter had a load of 9-0 on the third head. Lomas reducing it by singles and an occasional pair until the score stood at 12 all. On the sixteenth Redpath replied with a pair, and Lomas scored two singles, equalising. On the nineteenth there was some wonderful bowling on this head by the two skips, with the kitty, in the ditch. Lomas finally scoring the point. On the twentieth Canterbury were lying shot after the first twelve bowls. Then Lomas with his last bowl failed to take out the shot, and Redpath did not get up. The last head was a long one, and was chaiactcrised by superb bowling in the early stages. When the skips commenced to bowl all the bowls were to one side of the kitty, with Canterbury lying 3. Redpath’s first stopped short, and Romas also did no good. With a perfect bowl Redpath then covered the kitty, making Canterbury he 4. Lomas attempted a drive with his last but onlv cut out olio of the Canteibniy Uienboim immediately established a load in their game with West End. and the score was 8-5 on the niiidi head, and H-7 on the twollth. ihcii the northerners did not score a single point for five consecutive heads, and were 18-8 to the bad on the seventeenth head. West End scored a pair on the eighteenth head, but thereat tor did not add to their total. In the game between lomuka and Bahnacewcn the scores were even on the fourth, sixth, and tenth heads. Then Bnlmacewen ran to a good loud while their opponents stood almost stationary, adding only three points in eleven heads. . United had all the success on the first heads in their game with Hparu. and were 14-4 ahead on the eighth. At the sixteenth the score was -3-IJ. Timaru scored a 4 on the eighteenth, and another 4 on the twentieth making them only two down, hut United gained a good 3 on the last. In the early, stages of the game between Dunedin (O. L. Tyrrell) v. Christchurch (J. Rennie) the southerners led at first, hut after th i sixth head, when the score was 4 church took the lead and were / ahead on the fourteenth, holding the advantage of 6 ou the last. _ ~ On Saturday the surprise of the section plav was the elimination of A. H. Benefield’s rink from bt. John s, W anganui, last year’s champions. I nor to Saturday’s play this rink was veil rlaced with five wins and one loss, but two more losses in the , final three rounds settled their chance of entry into the post-sectional play. At the close of the ninth round there were thirty-seven rinks out of the 1-J t i, a t took part in the competition with three losses or loss. Only one came through with a clean “ore-namdy, the Mastcrton nnk skipped by J- Ken . W. F. Raphael’s Canterbury nnk had fMp’lit wins and then lost to Dr 11. N. Adams, .the Blenheim nnk. The Canterbury rink was assured of entry into the post-sectional play before the ninth round was commenced, but the Blenheim nnk had, to fight a winning game or suffer elimination. As a result of the bout both teams passed into the list of the elect. Dunedin (J. D. Smith) . Hataitai (VFielding), Ponsonby (M. a |^ e O> Edgeware (W. Efford), Sumner (T. T. Chambers), United (Dr J. D. Marks), and West End. Auckland (M. Bremner) also almost scored the possible, each rink losing only, pne game. No fewer than thirteen rinks scored seven wins to two losses. Temuka (T. Edwards), Kelburn (E. K. Lomas), and Canterbury (J. A. Redpath) were two rramos down at the dose of play on Friday, but Saturday found these three rinks’in good form and notching possible wins they survived. . Several of the undefeated rinks up to Friday lost two out of the throe rounds played on Saturday, but these pass into the post sectional play notwithstanding. Timaru (J. Moves) was in winning vein for seven rounds, and then fell away, losing the last two games. The lowest green winning score was 6-3 in section G, in which three rinks finished equal with that tally, and according to the conditions governing the competition the three pass into post sectional play, though other 6-3 rinks not being green winners do not do so..
