CABLES AND WIRELESS

THE LONDON CONFERENCE TAKEN OVER BY CABINET IMPERIAL IMPORTANCE RECOGNISED. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, January 15. (Received January 16, at 8.50 a.m.) In view of its Imperial importance Cabinet has taken over the cable conference, completely dissociating from it the Post Office, which is now placed in the same category as the Pacific, Eastern, and Marconi Companies, each of which is submitting to the conference an elaborate statement of its policy, finances, equipment, and service capacities. The Cabinet has nominated Mr Gilmour as the English representative instead of Sir W. Mitchell-Thompson (Postmaster-General), and suggests that Mr Gilmour bo appointed chairman, subject to the approval of the conference, because he is dissociated from both cables and wireless.

The conference meets, on Monday, and while there is apparently a definite move towards some plan of co-opera-tion, there is reason to believe that the desirability of maintaining the incentive to improve the services and to give the public the best and cheapest possible, will not be overlooked.—A. and N.Z. and ‘ Sun ’ Cable.
