A world’s record broadbill swordfish, weighing 6731 b, was caught by Mr H. White, of Wickham, Loudon, while fishing off Capo Brett (Auckland). Mr White, had an exciting struggle for two hours and a-half in landing the fish. The homestead on tho Arowhana Station (Poverty Bay), an eleven-roomed dwelling, owned hv Mr W. D. Lysnar, M.P., forty miles from Gisborne, was destroyed by fire early yesterday morning. Mr Lysnar and the housekeeper were both roused from sleep and escaped hurriedly, managing to save a few personal effects only. A six-roomed house owned and occupied by Mr F. R. Hyde was destroyed by fire at Woodeml (Canterbury) on Snndav evening. The building was insured in tlie Royal Office for £1,200, and the furniture, most of which was saved, in the Yorkshire Office for £250.
Four of the seven German seamen who deserted from the German steamer Kcrstou Miles at Auckland on Saturday were recaptured at Howick yesterday. A search was carried out on Sunday, and resulted in the men being found in the scrub, where they had spent the night. There is no trace of the other throe.—Press Association.
