FATAL FALL FROM HORSE
ACCIDENT AT MILLER'S FLAT Injuries mused through being thrown from a radieliorso near Miller's Flat on December 29 led to the death in the Dunedin Hospital yesterday of Francis Gorkin, aged fifty-one years, a foreman platelayer, in (ho employ of the Public Works Department. While Corkitt was riding the horse from Miller’s Flat towards Roxburgh, the animal suddenly fell, and he was thrown to the ground, sustaining injuries to his head and neck. He was taken to the Roxburgh Hospital, where he lay in an unconscious condition until January 3, when he was brought to the Dunedin Hospital. An operation was performed on the sth. Gorkin rallied for a time, but gradually sank, and died yesterday. An inquest was held at the hospital this morning before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M. (sitting as coroner). Sergeant M'Carthy represented the police. Evidence of identification was given by Alice Ward, a sister of deceased, and Dr Hanan (house surgeon) said his opinion was that the cause of death was injuries to the head, resulting in laceration of the nervous system of the brain. The Coroner adjourned the inquest sine die to enable a. statement to bo obtained from a man who witnessed the accident.
