NEW GUINEA MASSACRE
THE CONDEMNED NATIVES COMMUTATION OF SENTENCES. Press Association—By Telegraph-Copyright. 11ABAUL, November 24. (Received November 25, at 1.30 a.m.) In connection with the Makanai massacre, twice within tlie past month all preparations have been made and the sentenced natives informed that they would be hanged in the morning. The last occasion was yesterday'. To-day the Administrator announced the commutation of the sentences to 15 years’ imprisonment. Grave concern is caused by the attempt of the Administration to .ignore the chief judge, who clearly stated that he recommended mercy on stated grounds, and assured the counsel for the defence that no sentence would be ignored. The action of the Administration is regarded as remarkable."
