[Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, October 28. A plea for lenient treatment, made on behalf of George William At ford, who had pleaded guilty to a charge of indecent assault on a, young girl, on account of accused having been badly gassed in the war, was not acceded to bv Mr Justice Herd man, who said the law looked upon offences against little children as being _ extiemely serious, and for such crimes hero was a maximum penalty of seven years. The tendency nowadays seemed to be to consider the future of _ the prisoner before the safety of society, but it was his duty to consider first what could be done to prevent offences of his kind. It had been stated by a police officer that prisoners had oh three occasions been guilty of offences in regard to the same child. Atford was ordered reformative detention not exceeding twelve months.
