Taking advantage of the pre-occupa-tion of the military in combating the menace raised by the advance of the Nanking forces on Hankow, bandits are swarming -the Yangtse gorges, attacking the principal trading centres of Ichang, Chungking, 1 and Wanhsion. The authorities are powerless to suppress the outrages in the cities. Vessels in the vicinity have been wantonly looted. The military have been appealed to without result. The latter are commandeering steamers, irrespective of nationality, for the transportation of reinforcements to assist in repelling the advance of the Nanking 'troops.
