ANIMAL WELFARE WEEK
Animal Wei lam Week is, being observed throughout the dominion iioiu Monday, October d-1, until Sunday, October 30. Tbo various societies for the prevention of cruelty to animals are undertaking the arrangements lor tins week in tbo various districts throughout the dominion, tbo object being to bring the matter of animal rvellaic prominently under the notice or the citizens of the dominion. The Otago Society has communicated with the head masters of the schools throughout Otago, asking if they could find time during this week to address their pupils on the necessity of showing kindness to dumb animals. The ministers of the churches throughout Otago have also been invited to make special reference to this subject on Sunday next; while superintendents of Sunday schools have been requested to address their scholars, the object being to create a love amongst people of this dominion for dumb animals, and to interest the public. Sir George Fenwick, president of the society, broadcasted a most interesting address on 1 Animal Welfare ’ last night. Jt has also been suggested thta parents might interest their children in the care" of dumb animals, and instill a love for animals in their children, pointing out to them the necessity of at all times using their best efforts to prevent cruelty to animals. It is felt that cruelty is often caused, not by intention, but by thoughtlessness; and if the public can be educated that many acts of cruelty will be obviated.
