OBITUARY

FOREMAN M. PIPER. Widespread regret will lie occasioned by the news ot tho death of Foreman Michael riper, of the Roslyu Firo Brigade, which . occurred at his residence, Highgaic, yesterday morning. Tho deceased, who was senior officer in charge ot the Roslyu Station, had been associated noth tho Dunedin Firo Brigade since November, 1901, and thus ho had completed over twentysix years’ continuous ' service. Ho joined tho brigade as a driver in tho days when it was under City Corporation control, and for a period ho was well known as tho driver of the hook imd ladder carriage. The introduction of tho motor machines resulted in bis being promoted to a position ns ono oi the junior drivers at the Central Station, and subsequently bo was further promoted to a position as driver at the South Dunedin Station. On tho opening of the Roslyu Station in 1920 Driver Piper was appointed officer in charge, a position ho occupied at the time of his death. He was the holder of the United Firo Brigades’ Association twenty-five years’ gold star. To his sorrowing wife and relatives sympathy will be extended in their bereavement. The late Foreman Piper will be given a firemen’s funeral to-morrow afternoon, when a saluting party from tho brigade headquarters will pav its la-t respects as the cortege passes the Octagon. At a meeting of officers ondmieinbcvs of tho Central Brigade.last night, feeling reference was made to the death of Mr Piper by the officers, and it was decided to forward a letter of sympathy to Airs Piper and family.
