“ THE WIZARD OF TKE VISLIH " It. has now been definitely arranged for Jascha Heifetz, the brilliant violinist, to give ono recital in Dunedin. This will take place on Saturday, Auggust 20, under the direction of Messrs J. and N. Tail. It has been .said of Heifetz that “no such violin genius has been vouchsafed to the world within living memory. . . . It was miraculous playing, the like of which wo have never heard.”. The musical critic of the New York ‘Globe’ wrote: “The name of Heifetz should be written in letters of flame. We have witnessed a miracle. Such perfection leaves the hearer dumbfounded,” Heifetz is young in years, but he has the soul of the true artist and the ability of the great masters of the violin. In many parts of the world this musical phenomenon—for such he really is—has and in every instance he lias electrified his hearers and roused them to the wildest enthusiasm by the brilliancy of his playing, his wonderful technique, and the sheer beauty of tone he obtains from his valuable instruments. lu Australia, where he now is, it was the same—vast audiences that sat enthralled at the brilliancy of his playing, his impeccable technique and the broadness and fervidness of his stylo. His recitals have been remarkable for the enthusiasm displayed by the audiences, and Heifetz lias been acclaimed as the most brilliant as well as the most modest violinist who has even visited Australia. Ho has returned a master —a young man who has developed physically as well as mentally; with a mature conceptive instinct that .is rare in ono in the early twenties. There is a singular case with Heifetz which makes him a most fascinating .artist. Every sign of energy, every indication of physical effort, is elimi- | noted even when playing passages of j massive power, and in this outward restraint there is a cahnnfss that is nothing short of uncanny. It is,not only marvellously witching playing, but classic repose, superb tone, and -intellectual and emotional interpretation. This, then, is the Heifetz wlm wilt be ; with ns next month—the musical wonder of the age, and one of the greatest j masters of the violin the world has I ever produced.
