ALLEGED ATROCITIES
LABOR IN FRENCH COh’GO SCENE IN PARLIAMENT. PARIS, July 8. An uproar was caused in the Chamber of Deputies when M. Novelle,_ a Socialist deputy,' submitted a motion concerning the allegations in Andre Gide’s book describing the conditions of native labor in the French Congo, alleging that atrocities had been com mitted by plantation overseers., - Other Socialists vehemently supported M. Novelle. When M., Perrier, the Minister for the Colonies, rose to reply ho was shouted down. The hubbub increased until the Premier, M. Poincare, angrily asked the Chamber whether it wanted a new Government. . The Chamber, realising that M. Poincare was serious, rejected the interpellation by 413 votes to .142*
