NORTH EAST HARBOR NOTES

[From Gnu Correspondent.] A progressive euchre tournament was held in Malcolm’s tea rooms on Saturday evening under the auspices of the committee of tho local Anglican Church. There was a good gathering of players, and an enjoyable time was spent. Brizes were given both for the winners and tho losers at euchre, the successful players being Mrs Bewley and Mr Rattray, while Mrs Rattray and Mr Percy secured tho “ booby ” prizes. A most successful social was held in the hall on Saturday evening, the function being organised by the_ Jolly Roys’ Orchestra. Excellent music was supplied by the orchestra, which was composed of six instrumentalists under tho leadership of Mr Sharp (piano), while fho duties of M-C. wore carried out by Mr Snow.

In the past tho majority of the social functions hold in the local hall have entered principally for the younger folk, the chief attraction being dancing. With a view to catering for the elderly folk, the Ratepayers’ Association has decided to run concerts at intervals, the first of which will he held in tho hall on Saturday evening, when a, varied entertainment will he provided by the “ Kanamusu Entertainers.” A number of these artists entertained our hoys whilst in camp at Mnfarne recently. Wednesday night was a big evening in the Card Club’s present season, the occasion being the annual visit of members from the Broad Bay Club. Over sixty players took part in the progressive euchre tournament, which was held in tho hall, and tho gathering proved another of those enjoyable functions which have for many years taken place between the two clubs. Prior to the commencement of play Mr Ferguson, president, extended a hearty welcome to tho visitors, who secured the two first prizes, while the local players were successful in securing both the booby prizes. For the ladies’ prize Miss dearwater and Mrs Rattray tied, and in a close game in the play off tho former proved the winner. For tho gents’ prize Messrs Clearwater, Haig, Jones, and Percy tied with equal wins, and in the play off the former won. Mrs Riddell and Mr Ferguson were the winners of the booby prizes. An enjoyable supper was banded round at the conclusion of the tournament, while the ladies provided sweets for the tables during the play. Before presenting the prizes the president expressed the pleasure of his club members at having their Broad Bav friends with them once again. Mr Irvine, on behalf of tho visitors, conveyed their thanks for the enjoyable evening and tho hospitality bestowed on them. It was the intention of his club to invite the members of tho Northeast Harbor Card Club to meet them at an early date. The conveniently-situated building recently acquired by the local Anglican Church Committee for divine service was on Sunday evening, when a confirmation service was held. The service was conducted by the bishop, and associated with him were the Rev. J. L. Richards (vicar of the parish), Mr Groves (student), and Mr West (lay reader). Prior to commencing tho service the bishop extended his congratulations to the members on securing such a suitable building for their church, and trusted they would all continue to ably carrv on the good work so well begun. Ton candidates wore presented for confirmation. Tho service was altogether an impressive one. A meeting of property-holders in Wharfdale was held in tho hall on Monday evening for the purpose of discussing ways and means for tho preservation and protection of tho water supply belonging to the subdivision. Mr J. M‘Donald was voted to tho chair. The following were elected_ a committee for the purpose of going into the question of details and particulars for presentation to a future meeting Messrs J. M'Donnld (chairman), Beaton, Brookman, Gibson, Marett, Phillips, Rattray (sec. pro tom.), W. N. Riddell, W. H. Riddell, A. Scott. It was resolved that the secretary write Mr E. C. Reynolds for particulars regarding the rights and license of the water service, and the handing over of such rights to tho proposed board. It was resolved that a public meeting of freeholders of Wharfdale bo called when the necessary information was procured, with a view to the proper constitution of a water hoard.
