REFORMATIVE TREATMENT
SEVERAL CHARGES OF RECEIVING At the City Police Court this morning Leonard Alton Stuart Griffiths was charged (1) with the theft at Invercargill, on May 8, 192(3, of a suit of clothes valued at £(3 10s, the property of William George; (2) with receiving a suit of clothes of the value of £6 10s, knowing the same to have been dishonestly obtained, (3) on April 26, 1926, at Dunedin, receiving jewellery of a'total value of £SO, the property of Jessie Wells, knowing the same to have been dishonestly obtained; (4) on or about April 28, at Dunedin, receiving a lady’s evening dress and other clothing of a total value of £22 5s 6d, the property of Katherine Elizabeth Thompson, knowing the same to have been dishonestly obtained. Accused appeared for sentence on the Dunedin charges. On the application of the chief detective, the charge of theft was withdrawn. The Chief Detective sajd accused had gone to Invercargill with a man named Collins, who took a suit of clothes from a shop door. Collins handed over the suit to accused, who concealed it under his coat and gave it back to Collins later. Collins was dealt with at the Supremo Court, and was sentenced to three mouths for theft and fivo years reformative treatment for receiving. A man named Duggan was sentenced for the theft of'the articles stolon in Dunedin. The accused said ho had been drinking heavily. The Magistrate: Yes, the probation officer states that you haven’t stopped drinking since you returned. > ' On the charge of receiving the jewellery accused was ordered to be detained for a period not exceeding twelve mouths. On the other charges he was convicted and discharged. The magistrate said ho would submit a report to the Prisons’ Board, who could send him to Rota Roa if it was considered desirable.
