HILLSIDE WORKSHOPS LIBRARY

THE ANNUAL MEETING The forty-third annuul meeting of the subscribers to the Hillside AVorkshops Library was held at the Social Hall last evsjiing. The president (Mr G/J. Graham) was id the chair, and there was a fair attendance of subscribers. The Chairman moved the adoption of the annual report. In so doing he congratulated the subscribers upon the excellent report which had been submitted to them. The success of the institution was duo to the keen interest taken in its affairs by the committee, and especially the bon. secretary and the librarian. He had noted that the committee was watching the proposed change over very carefully, and keeping in touch with the officers of the department. Mr I). Melville seconded the motion, which was carried unanimonslv.

The report stated that the revenue and subscribers’ list were better than last year, and the excess of assets over liabilities was £f)4l ,12s Bd. The bank balance had been reduced by about £B, but they had incurred expenditure in connection with the proposed new library which would not recur. They had about 16,000 hooks on the shelves, the majority of which were, (naturally, fiction; hut they had also accumulated a very fair reference library, including the latest, technical works. The building which was to contain the new library rooms was well under way, and they would probably be in the new quarters bo£pre the end of the year. In this connection the committee, after consultation with Mr M'Ewan, the librarian of the Carnegie Public Libary, approached the department regarding the lighting and interior arrangements, The superintendent of workshops met them very, fairly, and the plan now showed excellent lighting arrangements. A plan was prepared showing their'ideas on the shelving and reading tables, and this plan, they bad every reason to suppose, would bo adopted by the department. The committee bad to thank Mr F. C. Evans for, drawing the plan; also, utter consultation with Mr M'Ewan, it had decided to adopt the card index system for cataloguing purposes. The necessary cards had already been typed unci the cabinet made, so that everything was. ready for the shift over. Daring the past year there were several changes in the personnel of onr officebearers. The president (Mr AV. H. Johnston), who had always, since bis first arrival at Hillside many years ago, taken a keen, active interest in the library, resigned when bo retired on superannuation. Messrs G. AVillett and AV. Rodgcrspn, who bad been active and energetic members of the committee, also retired on superannuation, and both of them had been elected life members of the institution. The subscribers would be ashed at the annual meeting to pay a, similar compliment to Mr Johnston. Mr Godher, who for many venrs was secretary of the Pc tone Library, and took an active interest in library matters when be was bore, bad returned to bis old home. The committee bad also lost Messrs G. Johnston. 11. D. Cowan, and R. Moore from the list of The report would not be comnlcte without an acknowledgment of the faithfnj and meritorious services of the librarian _(Mr A. H. Dyer), who spared neither time nor energy in fostering the interest of the library, and incidentally worked more in bis spare time than in bis regular hours. His assistant. Mr S. Austin, who was a good and faithful worker, was taking on more serious responsibilities, and bad resigned. His successor. Mr Turkington, was shaping well. Mr AV. If. Johnston was elected a life member, avid the meeting closed with votes of (banks lo the bon. secretary and treasurer and the librarian.
