CAPTAIN ILL AT SEA
OPERATION BY WIRELESS DIRECTION CHIEF STEWARD AHD CHIEF OFFICER OFFICIATE [Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, July 20. The value of wireless on ships in cases of emergency was exemplified during the voyage of the Union Company’s steamer Waipahi. which returned to Auckland this morning. When the vessel was cn route from Auckland to Rarotonga the master, Captain G. A. Grey, became very ill, and, with still a considerable distance to travel, his condition was such that he required ini mediate medical attention. The Waipahi does not carry a doctor, and_ a wireless message describing the captain’s illness was despatched to H.M.S. Veronica. Acting on instructions received by wireless from the doctor of the warship, F. Pearson, chief steward of the Waipahi, assisted by J. D. Lnndie, chief officer, carried nut an operation, and as a result the suffering or the patient was considerably relieved. The . Veronica reached Rarotonga, two hours before the Waipahi, and when the steamer arrived all arrangements had been made for the admission of Captain Grey to hospital. Ho is still in hospital, but is making good progress towards recovery. Mr Lundie took command of the vessel, tho other officers being promoted accordingly.
