SOUTHLAND SEEKS ABOLISHMENT OTAGO BRANCH DISAGREES At the meeting of the Olago Education Board to-day a was received from the Southland Education Board asking for support of the following resolution seeking the abolition of the Council of Education That this hoard is of opinion that the Council of Education, being purely advisory, should be abolished; and in lien thereof a conference of representatives of education boards should ho hold from time to time, as education hoards have a thorough knowledge of local conditions and educational administration, and would render greater assistance in keeping primary education up to date.” The Hon. Mr Fleming said lie did not think it would be advisable to replace the Council of Education by a conference of representatives of education boards. The Council of Education ■was composed of men and women concerned hi all branches of education, and various problems were discussed from all angles, lie did not think there was any chance of the council being abolished; if it were, it should not be replaced by the suggested conference, whose work would not bo nearly so effective. The hoard decided to disagree with the Southland resolution. “1 think that is quite correct,” commented the chairman. The Hon. Mr Fleming said the work of tho council spoke for itself; it did not need defending.
