The Karti"i arrived at Dunedin tins morning from Lyttelton, and was te sail this afternoon tor Blutt, -'lei bourne, and Adelaide. The Kaituna, from Westport via ports, arrived this morning, and is to tail to-night for Greymonth.

Bringing case oil and general cargo from Pacific: Coast ports, the Union Company’s motor ship Hauraki has reported that she expects to reach Auckland on Saturday evening next, Juno 18. From Auckland she is to go to Melbourne, Adelaide, and Sydney to complete discharge. THE FERRY SERVICE. The Manuka j from Wellington, arrived at Lyttelton at 10 o’clock this morning, and passengers came south by the 12.20 train. WEST NIVAUIA COMING. ' Messrs Turnbull, Martin, and Co. advise that the American'steamer West Nivaria left Auckland on Monday afternoon for Napier, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin, to continue discharging general cargo, case oil, and lumber from Pacific Coast ports. She is due hfero about June 23, and will proceed hence to New Plymouth to complete discharge. THE CANADIAN PIONEER. Messrs H. L. Tapley and Co. advise that tbo Canadian Pioneer will probably arrive at Dunedin on Friday from Halifax via northern ports, to discharge a. quantity of Canadian cargo and load products tor Now York, Boston, and Montreal. According to Lloyd’s Register, there were 1,216,000 tons of shipping being constructed in Great Britain ,* land during the quarter ended March last, an increase of 450,000 tons compared with tho previous quarter. The present totals are the highest since December, 1934, hut are still 6/3,000 tons below the average tonnage during the twelve months before the war. Advice has been received in Sydney from London concerning the trial trips of the Adelaide Steamship Company s new motor vessel Alinnipa. They' weic hold at Copenhagen on May 24 and 25, and tho speed developed was lo miles per'hour. The vessel was to leave Copenhagen on May 29, and will load at London for Australia. Before the Admiralty Division m London recently an action was brought by the owners, master, and crew of the well-known Federal Line steamer Devon to recover an award ior salvage services rendered to the steamer Eastern Aloon, belonging to tho United States Shipping Board, in the Tasman Sea, during Alay .of last year. Iho Devon, it will be remembered, was on route from Brisbane to New Plymouth. Her master received intormation that tho Eastern Aloon had broken her propeller shaft, and lost her propeller, and was drifting towards the dangerous Elizabeth reef. Tho Devon towed her to Sydney, a distance of 566 miles, in eight and a-half days. The judge awarded the plaintiff’s owners, master, and crew £10,250 in all, £7,850 to the owners and the. remainder to the master and crew.
