LYTTELTON TUNNEL
—— ELECTRIFICATION BY GOVERNMENT STATEMENT BY PRIME MINISTER. [Peh United Pres* Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, March 30. A definite statement that the Government was unable to see its way to a.ter its decision to proceed with the electrification of the Lyttelton tunnel was made by the Prime Minister this morning in reply to a deputation from the Port and City Committee. The deputation asked that the electrification of the tunnel should be held up for a short time, and that the Government should reconsider the committee s scheme of providing Christchurch with direct access to the sea by moans of a tunnel road. Air Coates congratulated the committee on the interest it was showing in the matter, but made it clear that the Q ,,6S * tion of electrification would not be held up. Regarding the construction of a tunnel road, he said that he personally did not feel inclined to contribute much towards it. but the matter could be discussed with the Main Highways Board.
