AROUND THE PENINSULA

POPULARITY OF RESORTS 1 A GOOD SEASON - .p Dunedin is particularly well favored with pleasure resorts on the various bays on the Peninsula side of the Otago Harbor, and though it is only comparatively recently that, by improvement in transport facilities, local residents have realised the desirability from a holiday 1 point of view of these delightful spots, on good authority it is possible to state i that during tho past five, or six months | more people have visited the various resorts around the Peninsula than ever before. The motor • service catering for tho needs of 'the Peninsula has now no 1 fewer than thirteen buses on tho road, * and during tho past season the steamer ferry service was also largely availed of. The motor traffic during the past few months lias been very heavy for ;.ll of the Peninsula resorts, and while the regular traffic has been steadily maintained, it is interesting to note that, with the improvements that have been effected in the roads, coupled with its proximity to town, Macandrcw’s Bay bids fair to become one of Dunedin’s most favored iburbs. This assertiop is given added iorce when it is stated from an authoritative source that numbers of Dunedin people are taking up residence permanently there, a fact which is reflected in the much greater volume of motor traffic to this place than was the case either last year or * two years ago. I From n holiday point of view, which portion of the Peninsula is the mostpopular? This is a query that is difficult to answer, for, with the number of per inanent residents at Macandrew’s Bay, motor traffic to this resort has been heaviest. From a purely holiday point, of view, however, Portobello right down to the Kaik is more popular than cvei before. A feature of the past holiday season has been the increase in the popularity of the Kaik as a pleasure resort, and the motor lound trip of the Peniusu'a, made so popular during the ExuihiUeu, has been availed of increasingly during the past few months. A new service was instituted by the company controllI ing the large fleet of motor buses, this , being to Wickhffe Bay. winch is on the ocean side of Portobello. Many people have made this trip, and .‘he beach ami surroundings at this now resort are pronounced as being one of the finest of the many splendid resorts about Dunedin. There has been groat activity in building all the way down the harbor i side of the Peninsula during the last j twelve mouths, and it is noticeable in ' many cases that_ the one and tworoomed cribs, which were so popular until quite recently, are now being ie placed by quite substantial houses as week-end residences. Apart from the thousands of people who have availed themselves of day and week-end excursions to tho various Peninsula resorts, many others have spout weeks at some of these spots, and tho hoarding-houses have been well patronised. The special Peninsula week-end motor services and round trips will, it is authoritatively stated, be continued through the winter, weather permitting, and it has been said that, though the number of week-enders from now on begins to show a big falling off, week-end-ing is not cut out altogether. Of course, football takes many to town on Saturday afternoons and shortens the week-end considerably. , Groat improvements have been; effected to the Dunedin-Portobcllo road in the way of cutting dangerous cori ners and widening the road, but further j improvements to the surface arc coni ternpiated. and this no doubt will in- | crease the popularity of some of the ! prettiest pleasure resorts in New Zealand.
