POSITION EVERYWHERE RELIEVED
SHANGHAI STRIKE ENDED INIERNATtONAL CO-OPERATiON. LONDON, March 28. (Received March 29, at 12.20 p.m.) A special Cabinet meeting, hastily summoned for this morning, led to the sensational heading in an evening paper’s contents bill ‘ Urgent Cabinet .Meeting Discusses China.’
The Australian Press Association learns from official circles that, though China was undoubtedly considered, this does not connote increased gravity of the situation. On the contrary, the official news shows that the position everywhere is relieved. Cabinet’s main purpose, so far as China was concerned, was to enable the Ministers to be fully informed prior to Sir Austen Chamberlain’s review of events in the House of Commons.
The labor situation in Shanghai has improved, and the- general strike has ended and the post office reopened. ZSio serious disturbances occurred.
Anglo-American co-operation for the defence of the Settlement is complete. Similar arrangements are expected shortly with the authorities of the French Concession, which admittedly 'S rather a weak spot. These samples ot international co-operation may be attributed to tbe bond tie events in Nanking, emphasising the need for standing together. Long graphic accounts of the lootings and murderings in Nanking, together with the suggestions in some Chinese correspondents’ reports that the foreign communities in the outlying cities have been neglected, are still faced with somewhat exaggerated complaisance in official quarters, whicn emphasise that the troubles are always checked as scon as the Cantonese main force arrives in any city.
The authorities appear very anxious to reiterate that incidents like Nanking do not provide a valid reason for modifying the British policy. The Admiralty to-night took the unusual course of requesting the Broadcasting Corporation to contradict the rumors of a second bombardment of Nanking, which had been announced n the first news bulletin.
