The session of the provincial law court was about to begin, but the court crier had not yet shown up. At the eleventh hour a messenger boy dashed up and handed the judge a letter from the missing functionary. Ihe judge read it amid breathless silence, and then solemnly announced: “I have hero a message from our court crier, saying, ‘Wife’s mother died last night. Will not be able to cry to-day.’ ”
