FOBTKIGHTLY MEETING Tliere were present at the fortnightly meeting last night the mayor (Mr T. Anderson), Crs Lunn, Smith, A. Love, W. Love, Morgan, Mackie, Campbell, Willmott, Bell, and Allan. CORRESPONDENCE. The Rev. W. Howard Finch invited the mayor and councillors to the Anzac service on April 25, at 11 a.m.—lnvitation accepted. On riilf of the local _ Association Foot 0 Club Mr W. Madigan applied for t.., uso of the Recreation Ground every second Saturday. _ The club was playing tbreo teams this season, and favorable consideration of the application was asked for.—Cr Campbell said the Rugby Club had helped to keep the ground in order for years past, rad should havo consideration.—Cr Marine moved that the request ho granted.— Cr Lunn thought the Soccer players should have the use of the ground occasionally. He did not remember the Rugby Union helping.—After discussion it was decided to bold over the matter in order to obtain further_ information with a view to ascertaining whether playing areas could be found for both clubs.

Braithwajte, on behalf of tho local Rugby Football Club wrote thanking the council for the good order of the playing ground, and asking that a hoc. water service he installed at the pavilion.—lt was decided to supply hot water from tho gasworks, the applicants to do the installation. : Air W. B. Steel submitted a balancesheet of the Otago Provincial Court at tho Exhibition, to which the council had subscribed handsomely.—Received. Cr Mackie said ho was proud to think that the town helped to put on such a fine show, as the Otago Court undoubtedly was.

Mr R. B. Hammond, Director- of Town Planning, asked councillors to meet him at a combined meeting of representatives of local bodies in Dunedin on the 80th inst. to discuss matters under the Town Planning Act.—lt was resolved to thank the writer for the invitation, 'and that the mayor and Ci Lunn represent the council. Air J. A. Thomson wrote thanking the council for erecting a fence at the top of a steep embankment in Grey street, making it safe for the children. -The letter was received, REPORTS.

Tho Works Committee reported that during tho past fortnight the foreman and staff havo been engaged on general maintenance work about the borough. Fortv-five loads of metal and twenty-eight loads of blinding were carted and spread on the low road at Carey’s Bay. Two loads of rock were also carted and spread on this road. Tarring, . sanding, and asphalting is being pushed on with as weather per-, mits. With regard to the renewals being made at the asphalt shed, it has been found that, the old portion of the front wall is also in a very bad state. Tho contractor has agreed to rebuild this portion with new brickwork for tbo sum of £2l, and .as. tho matter is one of urgency'your committee has give’’ instructions for the work to be carried out. The contractor has made a start, with rebuilding the asphalt shed. A report has boon submitted from the foreman on tho mud tank in Magnetic street opposite Air Bell’s property. A great deal of inconvenience has been caused lately, by this tank overflowing during heavy rains. The foreman states that, a concrete tank of larger capacity should bo put in, with, a grating on top in place of the present iron plate, the estimated cost being £s._ Your committee recommends that this work be carried out. During the period under review all mud tanks have been cleaned and channels swept.—Cr W. Lore explained the position in regard to reminding the brick wall at the asphalt shed.—The report was adopted. Tho Gas Committee recommended that, with a view to encouraging the use of gas cookers, the -price of gas be 9s 2d per thousand feet up to two thousand feet, and 8s 4d up to five thousand feet. —Tho report was adopted. It was decided to endeavor to get Miss Finlay to give some demonstrations locally of gas cooking in Port Chalmers.

The Finance Committee reported that tho fortnightly receipts amounted to £36 13s lOd, the expenditure to £1,197 9s. Tho committee recommended that a 200-gallon water, tank bo placed in a convenient place at the upper end of the cemetery.—Adopted.—The mayor congratulated the council on the credit balance at the.end of the term.
