COUNT CAVOUR. [Special to the ‘ Star.'] CHRISTCHURCH, March 28, Since his meritorious victory in the Trenthara Gold Cup Count Cavour has caused his trainer much‘anxiety owing to his injured leg swelling to such an extent on the clay following the race that he was not able to put any weight on the foot. Arrangements had been made to entrain him from Wellington to Auckland to go by the TJlimaroa to Sydney last week, but it was deemed advisable not to undertake the long train journey, and the space was cancelled. The troubled limb has been under treatment at Trentham since the meeting, and an improvement was apparent on Friday last, otherwise the horse would have been brought back to Riccarton and the Australian trip abandoned. Accommodation has now been booked by the Manama, leaving Wellington on Friday next, but a definite decision will not be arrived at until to-morrow or Wednesday as to whether the arrangements shall be carried out. T. H Gillett states that the horse has been able to carry out light track work, but that there was no use in undergoing the risk of transporting him while his foot was in such a, bad

state. Should he sail this week he will not have much time to bo wound up for his Easter engagements, hut Gillett considers that if the trouble has disappeared by the time of his arrival in Sydney a few gallops will put him right. LIVERPOOL GRAND NATIONAL, Prats Association —By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, March 26. Sprigg’s victory ■in the Grand National meant more to his seventy-iour year old owner, Mrs Partridge, than the mere winning of a great race. It represented the realisation of her dead son’s ambition. The horse was bred by Captain Partridge, who was killed in France during Armistice week. Mrs Partridge always had great_ hopes that Spripg would some day' win the National. Sprigg is more than a_ mere racehorse. His owner says he is just one of the family. He looks round both before and after the race until he hears his mistress’s voice. The King congratulated Mrs Partridge. AMATEUR ATHLETICS.
