OPENING OF CANBERRA

INTEREST IH AMERICA

SUGGESTED INVITATION,

Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright,

VICTORIA (8.C.). January 10. A message from Glacier (British Columbia) states that Air Bruce’s stay in the United States and Canada lias provoked widespread interest in ami comment on Canberra. The opinions expressed indicate clearly_ that these countries regard the opening of Canberra as an important international event. Mr Bruce, when approached concerning the possibility ot extending a formal invitation to foreign Powers to attend the opening ceremonies, _ pointed out that invitations were being extended to all tho dominions; and, while it was extremely desirable to have foreign nations represented, this would involve large parties, and the accommodation available was insufficient to provide proper hospitality. Opinion in the United States, and particularly in official circles in Washington, is that the new declaration regarding Empire relationship gives special international significance to the opening of Canberra, and any invitation from Australia would undoubtedly bo accepted. Air Bruce expressed pleasure at this added interest in Australian national affairs. OPENING TO BE BROADCASTED. MELBOURNE, January 12. (Received December 12, at 10.55 a.m.) The Federal Government has arranged to broadcast the opening of Parliament at Canberra and the fluke of York’s speech.
