BEAUTY AND THE BEAST.
‘‘Miss Canterbury” visited the Auckland Zoo on Tuesday, and spent an hour among the lions and tigers, the birds and the monkeys, and fed them all. “She loved them all,” says the Christchurch ‘Star,’ ‘‘ but it was the elephant, Jumuna, that held the greatest appeal for the little girl; and it seemed as if they actually had an understanding, and would have liked to spend the day together. ‘ Miss Canterbury ’ rode around the grounds on Jumuna’s back, smiling sunnily from her high seat, and the elephant held her.trumpet aloft and sang a paean of praise. There never was a prouder elephant than she.”
