NEW ART GALLERY

GENEROUS GIFT OF m AMO MRS SARGOOD MOTE OF APPBEGIATICH The City Council last night formally accepted the gift by Mr and Mrs P. R. Sargood to the city of the art gallerj on Logan Park, and accepted tho offe. of the Early Settlers’ Association to purchase the present art gallery building in Cumberland street. in presenting tho report of the Finance Committee Cr Taverner said that, although the matter had been delayed, the expression of gratitude to Mr and Mrs P. R. Sargood was none the less sincere. It was recommended that the citizens’ thanks to the donors be recorded in a suitable manner. The Mayor (Mr H. L. Tapley, M.P.) said he thought that it was fitting that, as-mayor of tho city, he should express the thanks of the citizens to Mr and Mrs P. R. Sargood. It was not the first public-spirited action that had been performed by Mr Sargood. Mr and Mrs Sargood were presenting this gallery as a memorial to their son, who fell on Gallipoli, and it was very appropriate that a memorial of that nature should be dedicated to one who fell in action_. Mr Sargood’s action was an inspiration to other wealthy citizens of our city to do something of a similar nature._ Me had had in past years public-spirited men who had the means to spend money fairly liberally, and ho hoped there would bo other gifts from other wealthy citizens later on. They were all most grateful to Mr and Mrs Sargood for the gifts they had made. He was only sorry that these protracted negotiations had prevented them from readily and spontaneously accepting the gift when it was made some months ago. Ho was sure Mr Sargood would realise the difficulty in which the council had been placed. It was satisfactory that all the difficulties had been brushed away, and they were now in a position to accept their generous gift. He was glad to see that a fitting minute was to bo prepared expressing tbs council’s appreciation _of this generous gift on behalf of the citizens. The report of tho committee was adopted.
