THE ROYAL SHOW

RECORD EXHIBITS GOVERNOR ON NEW ZEALAND'S NEEDS [Pbb United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, November 16. Boisterous weather, with rain prevailed ior the opening of the Royal Show, but improved as the day progressed. The display of live stock is impressive. It is the record cattle display for New Zealand, Jerseys and Friesians predominating. The horse display is also a record, there being nearly 500 exhibits. The display of sheep is the best ever seen in Auckland, and is regarded by the experts as magnificent The pigs section is also a record, both as to numbers and quality. The show was opened by the Gover-nor-General, who was entertained at a luncheon on the grounds. Mr W. Perry, of Masterton (president), replying to the toast ot the Royal Agricultural Society, said the objects of the society were to provide a competing ground for the best stock in the dominion, and to educate breeders to .the fullest extent possible. They bad there to-day a very fine display of stock, which far exceeded the anticipations of the society. When it decided upon Auckland for this Royal Show he had hesitation in accepting. They had there what was probably the finest display of dairy stock in the Southern Hemisphere, and certainly the finest that had ever been shown in New Zealand. The sheep display was also remarkably fine, and larger than had been thought would be the case, the Southdowns being especially good. The entries in the fat sheep section marked a record, and the exhibit was equal in quality to sheep shown in Canterbury last year. 'The southern competitors were too few, but the chief reason for this was the heavy transport charges, which was one of the chief difficulties that had to be contended with. •He hoped the weather would be kind on the morrow, and make a complete success of this Royal Show. (Applause.) The Hon. A. D. M‘Leod, Minister of Lands, proposed “ The Town and Trade of Auckland,” the mayor (Mr G. Baildon) replyinig. The Governor-General proposed " Agriculture in New Zealand.” He said it was true that some people might say that the Royal Show should not be held at a place which was an extremity. The same difficulty existed in the Old Country. Sometimes the show was held at a popular centre, and at other times at an extremity town; but to uphold its national character it could not always be held at one spot. This same condition must hold m New Zealand, which consisted of two long islands; but he thought it was a very good thing for educative and other purposes that the show should be held sometimes at so populous a centre as Auckland. It would bring home to every single individual how concerned he should be with the primary industries which had brought New Zealand to the proud position of one of the greatest producing countries in the workL Such shows did much to stimulate all in their efforts to help in the progress of their country, and they pointed to the enormous importance of importing the very finest breeding stock to make for higher production, and to the furtherance of scientific study and experiment for the general improvement of agriculture. Other countries having a great pull over New Zealand geographically were far ahead of us in scientific farming knowledge, and if New Zealand wished to get ahead in the race for the world’s markets it would have to catch up in the matter of scientific education. _He wished the greatest success to agriculture in New Zealand, and hoped that this Royal Show would do much to advance it. (Applause.) The toast was replied to by the Minister of Agriculture (Hon. 0. J. Hawken) and by Dr C. J. Reakes (DirectorGeneral). The awards were:— CATTLE.
