SWIMMING

DUNEDIN CLUB'S CARNIVAL SUCCESSFUL FIXTURE. The Municipal Baths were packed from floor to ceiling for tho first swimming carnival of the season, which was hold under the auspices of the Dunedin Amateur Swimming Club last night, and the large crowd present witnessed an attractive programme, which was pushed through in good time. The fixture was a successful one in every way, reflecting credit on the organisers, and, though no particularly outstanding times were recorded, there were several good performances, which augur well for the success of the coming season. Most of the events drew good entries, and added interest was given to the meeting by the fact that several provincial and New Zealand champions took part. C. J. E. M'Lean, the Otago men’s champion over all distances, who has been in Auckland since last season, made his reappearance, and from the back mark in the 100yds handicap ho filled second place to the New Zealand junior boys’ champion, L. Olds, to whom he was conceding 9sec. Olds went exceptionally well, and on present form he should be hard to beat in the junior events at the forthcoming national championships. M'Lean swam a good hundred, and, though he tired over the final stages, he must have cut the distance out in under 63sec. C. B. Lewis, the ex-New Zealand 220yds breast-stroke champion, swam a good race in the 100yds breast-stroke handicap for so early in the season, just failing to head the intermediate, D. Olds, to whom he was conceding 13sec. Most of the events produced spirited finishes, and in the 33 l-3yds handicap, which was won by A. S. Douglas, a newcomer to Dunedin, the finalists finished practically together. Tho 66 2-3yds ladies’ handicap marked the first appearance as seniors of Miss K. Miller and Miss M. Jepson, New Zealand intermediate girls’ title-holders last season; and Miss D. Magee, exAuckland and New Zealand junior champion, also faced the starter. Miss Magee, from a handicap of 6sec, won by two lengths, but a ding-dong go resulted between Miss Miller and Miss Jepson for second place, the former getting the verdict by half a length. The 33 l-3yds girls’ handicap was won by Miss Nancy Olds, the eight-year-old representative of the well-known swimming family, who was making her first appearance in a competitive event. The diving was of a high standard, the competitors including R. C. Calder, the New Zealand men’s champion, and Miss M. Morrison, Otago and ex-New Zealand ladies’ champion. Calder gave a finished display in the neat dive, in which he took the honors; and later in the evening he gave a fine exhibition of fancy diving, along with H. Walker, the ex-New Zealand champion. The water polo match between St. Clair and Dunedin was well contested, and a novelty event between a swimmer and an angler created considerable amusement.

The duties of starter were in the hands of Mr J. L. M’lndoe, and the judges in the swimming races were Messrs E. H. James, E. G. Janies, and H. H. Henderson. The diving judges were Messrs E. H. James, E. G. James, and H. Walker. Praise is due to Mr B. Pinfold, who carried out his duties as Press steward in a most painstaking manner. Results:—

33 1-3 Yards Handicap.—First heat: A. Short (4sec) 1, A. S. Douglas (3see) 2. Three starters. Won by a touch. Time, 21 l-ssec. Second heat: T. R. Harland (4sec) 1, R’. Wilson (4sec) 2. Six starters. A good finish, Harland winning by a touch. Time, 21sec. Third neat: D. Watson (scr) 1, W. Boyd (Isec) 2. Four started. Boyd led until a few yards from the finish, Watson winning by the barest possible margin. Time, 21seo. Final:— A. S. Douglas (3sec) 1 T. R. Harland (4sec) 2 Also started: D. Watson (scr), W. Boyd (Isec), R. Wilson (4sec), and A. Short (4sec). This race provided one of the best finishes of the evening, the whole six finalists finishing in a heap. Douglas, a new member of the Dunedin Club from the north, swam a better race than in his heat, winning from the High School boy, Harland, by the barest margin. Time, 19 l-ssec. 33 1-3 Yards Junior Girls’ Handicap (14 years and under). —Miss N. Olds (6sgc) 1, Miss V, Foote (3sec) 2. Six starters. The winner, who is only eight years old, led all the way, and, swimming with ail easy crawl, she won by several lengths. There was a great tussle for second place, Miss Foote and Miss M. Fleming touching together. Miss Fleming, however, was disqualified for starting before her go. Time, 26 3-ssec.

100 Yards Breast-stroke Handicap.— D. Olds (13sec) 1, O. Lewis (scr) 2. Six starters. The scratch man, Lewis, swam a fine race. Olds held a good lead with 14 laps to go, but Lewis gained at the turn for the last lap, and finished very strongly, though Olds, the intermediate crack, who also swam well, hung on long enough to win by half a length. Time. Imin 37sec. 66J Yards Ladies’ Handicap.—Miss D. Magee (6sec) 1, Miss K. Miller (scr) 2, Miss M. Jepson (scr) 3. _ Four starters. Great interest centred in this race on account of the meeting of last year’s two New Zealand intermediate champions, Miss Miller and Miss Jepson. The ex-Auckland and New Zealand junior girls’ champion, Miss D. Magee, swam well from a good handicap, neither Miss Miller nor Miss Jepson being able to bead her. Miss Magee won by two lengths, but there was a great struggle between Miss Miller and Miss Jepson. The pair turned almost simultaneously, but Miss Miller took the lead with 20yds to go, and filled second place half a length ahead of Miss Jepson. Time, 51 2-ssec. In tho water polo contest St. Clair defeated Dunedin by 3 goals to 0 after an interesting exhibiton, the winners showing the better combination , Miss D. Bannatyne was the referee. The novelty event between an angler (H. Williams) and a swimmer (C. B. Lewis) created a good deal of amusement, the angler eventually proving successful in drawing the swimmer to the side of the baths. Neat Dive (standing and running from low and middle boards). —E. C. Calder 1, J. Fearns 2, E. Payton 3. Six competitors. A high standard was shown in tho neat dive, Calder, the New Zealand champion, giving a particularly fine display. 100 Yards Men’s Handicap.—L. Olds (9seo) 1, C. J. M'Lean (scr) 2. Three starters. Olds led all the way, and, though M'Lean made a big effort to reduce the lead, he was unsuccessful, and faded out over the last lap, Olds winning by four lengths. Time, 71sec. Blindfold Race.—Miss K. Miller and W. Boyd 1. Three pairs competed. Won easily. Life-saving Handicap.—C. J. E. M'Lean and C. B. Lewis (scr) 1, L. Olds and D. Olds (Bsec) 2. Four pairs competed. Won comfortably, though there was a good finish for second place. 1334 Yards Interclub Relay Handte cap (teams of 4). —Kiwi (W. Boyd, D. Gillies, D. Watson, and D. Olds), Isec, 1; St. Clair (A. Harrod, C. J. E. M'Lean, J. B. Simpson, and C. B. Lewis), scr, 2. Five teams competed. Great interest was taken in this event, which provided a good race, though Kiwi won fairly comfortably, the winner’s last man, Watson, finishing with something to spare. Time, 81 2-ssec.
