The monthly meeting of the Dunedin Irish Society was held recently in St. Joseph’s Hall, there being a good attendance of members and friends. The president (Mr J. Maguire) presided. Amongst thoso present were the patron of the society (Right Rev. Dr Whyte) and Rev. Father Collins. The principal feature of the programme was an exceptionally fine lecture on Irish music delivered by Mr J. P. Ward. At its conclusion Mr Ward was very cordially thanked by the president for the instructive and enjoyable treat he had afforded his hearers. Dr Whyte expressed appreoiation'of the thought and industry expended by Mr Ward in arranging a discourse so capable on the melodies of Ireland, a subject that made a direct appeal to all possessing a love of music in its most tasteful form. The lecturer had evidently made an exhaustive study of his subject, and his kindness in sharing the knowledge he had acquired by imparting so much useful and reliable information deserved the highest commendation. In responding Mr Ward thanked Dr Whyte and the president for their appreciative remarks, also Miss M. Goughian for hor pianoforte rendering of the number of Irish melodies selected to illustrate his lecture. Songs were then given by Rev. Mr Collins, recitation by Miss A.
