CREWS TRYING EXPERIENCE FLAMES SWEEPING FROM HOLDS. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, October 22. (Received October 23, at 9.26 a.m.) A month’s perilous existence on a blazing ship, with the flames sweeping from the holds athwart and blistering the deck, was the experience of the crew of the steamer Tregantle, which has arrived at Liverpool. The vessel left Rosario laden with 72,000 tons of maize. Spontaneous combustion fired the bunker coal, and the flames spread to the cargo. The crew vainly fought the flames. Volunteers were lowered into the holds, directing hoses amid suffocating fumes of the maize, necessitating two-minute spoils. The vessel took refuge at Cape Verde, where the fire was beaten out, and 1,000 tons of damagd cargo was jettisoned, and the officers and crew ( numbering thirty-four, recovered from their burns.
