SATURDAY, OCTOBER 23. (Before Mr J. L. Hewitt, S.M.) THEFT CHARGE. “I have doubts as to the accused’s mental condition,” said Senior-sergeant Quartermaiu, in asking for tho remand for seven days for medical observation of Daniel Bagley, who was charged with stealing forty chaff sacks, valued at £1 13s 4a, the property of Ronald M'Donald Hillyer, at Anderson’s Bay on October 21, and with stealing eleven chaff sacks, valued at 11s, the property of Michael Moynihan, Tomahawk, on October 1. Accused pleaded guilty to both charges, and was remanded for a week for medical observation. AGAIN REMANDED. On a charge of leaving New Zealand with the intention of failing, without reasonable cause, to make adequate provision for the maintenance of his wife and two children, being an indictable offence. William Archie Middleditch (Mr A. C. Hanlon) was further remanded till Tuesday, on his own surety of £SO, and provided ho reported daily to the Port Chalmers Kb. Mr Hanlon said defendant’s had not jet bean finalised,.
