ALBANY SHEET SCHOOL
mm SURPRISE!) AT DEPABTMEfJT'S ATTITUDE NO RECORD ON DEPARTMENTAL FILES. The question of the erection of a now Albany Street School on Inc sue on the eastern -Milo of tlio Highway was again before the moctiug of Hie Education Beard yesterday. It was reported that the Minister of Education bad intimated that tJio calls upon the funds at his disposal lor the present financial year had been much heavier than ho had anticipated, and that tiiero was no prospect—tins year, at any rate—of funds Vicing provided for the new Albany Street School. The following motion was moved by the Hon. D. T. Fleming:—“Tho board loams with profound surprise that tho department lias no record of any commitment by tho department to tho erection of a new school at Albany street, tho matter haring been discussed by tho board on numerous occasions with the previous Minister of Education and with officers of the department on the accepted understanding that the present school and grounds are quite inadequate and in every respect not in accord with present-day requirements in a of this size and importance. Tho acquirement of a new site and the legislation in connection therewith being approved and promoted by tho department, tho board affirms without reservation that the clear and definite understanding between the board, and tho Minister was that tho provision of a new building was regarded as a matter of necessity and some urgency. In view of tho many discussions and conferences between the Minister and officers of the department, the absence of any record on the departmental file seems incomprehensible. Tho board affirms its deliberate opinion that tho renewal of tho Albany Street School is a matter demanding the attention of tho department, and respectfully urges that tho hoard's request bo provided for in tho departmental allocations for next year.” Tho Hon. Mr 'Fleming said that changes in the department probably had 'something to do with tho present position. Mr J. 11. Wilkinson, who seconded tho motion, '’aid tho matter had been deferred again and again for many years to the dissatisfaction of tho board and tho committee. It was honed that something definite would he done. Tho Chairman (Mr J. Wallace) said it came as a shock to him to find no records on the departmental files, because on many occasions he had gone to the site with the Minister and officers of the department. The motion was carried unanimously.
