DUNEDIN MANUFACTURERS

ENTER NEW ZEALAND FEDERATION ALL DUNEDIN PROPOSALS ADOPTED Mr James Hogg, president of the Dunedin Manufacturers’ Association, returned last night from Christchurch, whither ho went to attend the annual meeting of the New Zealand Industrial Corporation in company with Mr T. Somerville and Mr G. W. Heid. interviewed this morning, Mr Hogg said that tho Dunedin delegates wore more than satisfied with the success ol efforts in Dunedin to form a new federation in place of the existing New Zealand body. The Dunedin Manufacturers’ Association has been out of the New Zealand industrial Corporation for tho last four years, and it has refused to re-enter unless the constitution ol the corporation was drastically altered. As a result, however, cf the combined action of the Now Zealand manuiacturers at the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition it was felt by many men that a combined body in Mew Zealand is essential if the best results are to bo achieved, and Dunedin was asked to reconsider its position. following up that .suggestion, tho Dunedin Manufacturers’ Association recently drew up a completely new set of regulations providing lor drastic changes in the Industrial Corporation, these including a change of name and a change of tlic constitution, also for raising tho status of tho body ami securing tho best personnel in tho Jcndership.

After a lengthy discussion on the first day of the conference every item of the Dunedin proposals was carried, and a new body now conies into existence, styled the New Zealand Manufacturers’ .Federation, this including the Dunedin Manufacturers’ Association. The northern provincial associations will also change their titles from “ industrial associations ” to “ maiuifaciuiors’ associations” on the sumo lines as Dunedin.

Tho new rules prevent Uio automatic eleution to the position of dominion president of any man who happens to bo the provincial president when the headquarters' arc shifted. It is provided that'the president and vice-presi-dent of the federation lie elected by vote of the lour provincial associations. The causes which led up to the withdrawal pf tho Dunedin Manufacturers’ Association are now removed and will bo impossible in the future. Not only were all the Dunedin proposals adopted, hut the eonlcrcncc unanimously requested Dunedin to accept the headquarters for this year ol the New Zealand Federation of Manufacturers, and it was further requested that the president and secretary bo Dunedin men.

Mr Somerville and Mr Reid remained in Christchurch to attend further sittings of the association which were to deal with the business remits.

Mr Hogg’added; “Whilst onr whole executive was interested in and helped in the matter, it is but Jilting that credit should bo given to Mr (1. W. Reid, our very capable secretary, for his work in drafting tho regulations which were .submitted to and accepted by tho conference.”
