"MENACE TO HEALTH”
KAIKORAI STREAM’S POLLUTION “It is a menace to public health: it gets into a filthy state, and the smell is very noissome, and it is a very decided drawback to the borough.” Thus, at last night’s meeting of the Green Island Cr P. o._ Smellio broached the subject of pollution of the Kaikorai Stream. He thought the problem had not been fully considered by the council, and moved that the_ health inspector bo asked to confer with the council at the next meeting. “It is practically a cesspool,” said Cr Christie, who seconded the motion. He referred particularly to a spot at Kane’s Crossing, where the water did not seem to get away. Cr Lindsay: There is a lot of drainage from the borough to the stream, as well as from private properties. Cr M'Ahan stated that the stream was polluted by matter from works. Ho bad heard people whose places the creek passed through say that if they got the water clean it would go on clean, and it seemed to him that the council should start at the top and work down, trying to get the persons responsible Tor the nuisance to keep the stream clean, so that when it got to the bottom it would be pure. The motion was carried.
