NEW YORK, September 10. (Received September 11, at 12.40 p.m.) The Wimbledon winners put up a strong fight for France, but the American national doubles champions were too strong for them. Williams was a star in defence. He stood impassable at the net, cutting off returns with marvellous half-volleys that eluded the acrobatic efforts of the Frenchmen. The course of the sets almost duplicated each other, the Frenchmen usually starting well and often gaining the lead, but losing when the Americans spurted. It was the heavy fore-handers of the Americans which always turned the tide of battle. The America ns’ _ superiority was speedily evidenced in the third set. They lost no time in going out after victory, and took only thirteen minutes more to dispose of the Frenchmen. The latter put up their only battle in the seventh game. Then, Brugnon serving, the score was love--40. They came hack and carried the game five times to deuce, finally winning. Williams’s service was irresistible, Cochet driving out for the final point. The Americans were uncannily accurate in this set, allowing the French to beat themselves with frequent errors.
