UNEMPOYMENT

MEETING OF G!TiZEH3' EXECUTIVE To date'a total 0f,524 men have been placed in employment by the Town Hall authorities—ls 7 married men and 111 single men being sent to) corporation work and 142 married and 114 single men placed in private employment. These figures were presented; by the secretary (Mr R. Moffat) at this morning’s meeting of the Citizens’ _ Unemployment Relief Executive, which wits attended by Mr J. Wilson (in tho chair), Mr* A. T. Grandison (Labor Department), the Rev. V. G. Bryan King, and Miss Rumanian. The. Chairman reported that a further appeal bad gone forth, and that so far the response bad been satisfactory. In addition to monetary help, several offers of work had been received.

The Secretary said that .of the 197 men on the Labor Department’s unemployed roll this morning single and married men were equally divided. Mr Grandison said that the Labor Department had had a letter from the Secretary of Labor saying that he was making urgent representations to the Minister following their telegrams, and that the Minister would be conferring with the Public Works men. Mr Wilson said that the corporation was carrying on those in work just now in anticipation of being ' able to pay them, but there was no prospect of employing any further men. Mr King said that Air Moffat had received another position, and would lie terminating his' whole-time work with them. He wanted to pay a tribute to Air Moffat’s splendid work, the sympathetic way ho had handled the men, and the sound common sense he had displayed in looking after them. Miss llunciman endorsed Mr .King’s remarks, and the Chairman said that Mr Moffat’s services would still be available at the Town Hall Bureau between 9 a.m. and 9.90 a.m. daily. Mr Moffat briefly returned thanks for the appreciative remarks that had been made concerning him. Mr King said that there was not very much trouble in finding work in' the country for men who could do milking or ploughing, bub there was no work for unskilled men.

Mr Grandison: There are very few tradesmen enrolling now. The building trade is good.

The next meeting of tho executive will bo held on Wednesday!
