THE MILLIKAN RAY

MOST POWERFUL KNOWN. PIERCES 6FT OF LEAD. WASHINGTON, July 8. Professor R. A. Millikan’s light ray t known as the Millikan short-wave ray, is declared by the Smithsonian Institution to have the most powerful known penetrating force. In experiments carried out under the institution’s direction, the ray penetrated a layer of lead Cft thick. On November 9 _ last _ Professor Millikan, of the California Institute of Technology, announced to the National Academy of Sciences the discovery of rays, which he then claimed were far more powerful than the Gamma or the X-rays. Since then these rays have been the subject of strict investigation, and considerable importance is attached to the Smithsonian declaration, as it places the prestige of American science behind Professor Millikan’s discovery.
