Commander Alister Beal, who has been in command of the New Zealand Naval Squadron for the past three years, has been promoted to BoarAdmiral, and loaves the dominion on the 31st instant for England via Australia.—Wellington P.A. telegram. Dr S. L. Geerin has been appointed resident specialist officer at the Dunedin Hospital. This is a new appointment, and tho position a senior one. Dr A. Falconer, tho medical superintendent of tho Dunedin Hospital, asks that In's resignation should take effect from February 28, 1927, after which he assumes the position of superintendent of Ashbnrn Hall.

The Hospital Committee recommends the appointment of Dr D’Ath as visiting clinical pathologist to the DunedinHospital. Miss K. Drury, who is leaving the Empire Theatre after six years, was presented with a handbag and contents by the management and staff'.

The _ Education Board has made the following appointments:—Mr G. G. Sim, sole teacher, Cambrian; Mr J. S. Banvell, solo teacher, Luggate; Mr R. S. Duff, sole teacher, Buscot; Mr J. P. Fleming, sole teacher, Upper Tawanui; Miss I. E. Brown, fourth assistant, George street. The_ Canterbury College Students’ Association have nominated Messrs J. Brodie and A. D. Haslam for the Rhodes scholarship. Guests at the Excelsior Hotel include Mr K. F. Alexander (Wellington), Mr and Mrs Kitchen, Messrs Kingsland, Lynn, and G. Brown (Invercargill). Staying at the Hotel Carlton are Messrs W. Kriish and Baton (Sydney), Mr L. M. Ellis (Auckland), Mr E. A. Greenwood (Edendale), Messrs It. Skelq, S. E. Minty, and T. Lewis (Christchurch), Messrs H. E. Gee and S. Darby (Invercargill). A London cable states that it is announced that Sir Gerald Strickland (formerly Governor of Malta) will shortly marry Miss Margaret Hulton, a sister of the late Sir 'Edward Hulton, newspaper proprietor.
