HOTEL WORKERS’ UNION

RESIGNATION OF SECRETARY A meeting of the executive of the Otago Hotel, Restaurant, arid Boardinghouse Workers’ Union was held yesterday afternoon and evening to discuss special matters pertaining to the union with Mr J. M’Kenzio, the federation secretary at Wellington. Mr 6. S. Thomson was asked to explain the reasons for the dismisal of the assistant organiser. After tho explanation a lengthy discussion took place, as a result of which a motion was passed confirming Mr Thomson’s action, but expressing the opinion that Mr Thomson should have first consulted the executive.

Mr Thomson intimated to the meeting that, for health and business reasons, ho had decided to hand in his resignation as general secretary at the half-yearly meeting to bo hold on August 26, and to leave to that meeting the fixing of the date the resignation takes effect. On Mr Thomson pointing out that his health at the present time would not stand too much strain, it was decided that he should pay Mr A. W. Halpin, who had been assisting him in Woollen Mill Union work ,to help him with the organising and collecting until such time as applications could be called and a mew secretary appointed. Mr MTvenzio informed the meeting that the Federation Council, at a meeting held last week in Wellington, had decided to recommend Mr Frank Niall, at present employed as an organising collector by the Wellington _Union, as a suitable man for the position. Mr M'Kenzie was thanked for coming down to help the union over its present difficulties, both as regards the position of the secretary and the opposition union in Invercargill.
