PORTOBELLO ROAD BOARD
MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting yesterday afternoon was attended by Messrs H. Macandrew (chairman), J. Miller, J. T. Irvine, J. W. Shepperd, E. A. Gibson, J. J. Malcolm, A. S. Grigg, W. J. Lewis, and D. Hughes. Mr J. P. Wilson, Lower Portobello, wrote pointing out that the sea-walling was defective, and the tide was making the road unsafe.—Resolved that improvement be effected. Mr B. M. Duthie, honorary secretary of the North-east Harbor Ratepayers’ Association, wrote in regard to rent owing for the reserve on wßch the public hall stood.—lt was stated that the rent was £1 per annum, and the board decided that the association should pay the rent owing since the reserve was transferred to it. Mr A. G. Lewis, Portobello, complained of tbo bad state of the mad at the junction of the Kaik and j'ortobello roads.—lt was decided in vain the owner of the rattle responsible for the state of the road. The Undor-Secrctnry of the Lands Department advised that the hoard had been gazetted to control the local cemeteries.—Received.
Air AV. J. Braden, Broad Bay, applied for permission to erect a milk stand at the corner of (lien and Poriobollo roads.—Bcferred to the local members.
Mr G. A. Lewin forwarded particulars in regard to Dunedin City havng been appointed distributing authority in connection with heavy motor regulations.—Tho Chairman slated the position, which the members approved. Mr AV. Campbell. Alanor place, Dunedin, complained of tbc rough slate of the road at Hooper’s Inlet.—The letter was received. Mr AV. A. Scott asked that (he wafer tables bo cleared in Argylo street. Broad Bay. He was prepared to supply pipes for carrying away tbo water near bis garage.—Beforrod to local members.
Mr il. Marks, engineer Public AA 7 orks Department, notified . unexpended balances of Government, grants. —lt was resolved to apply for such balances, ami members discussed tho question of applying lor further grants for tho road.
Tho Secretary of the Hospital Board advised that the board’s levy for 1926-27 was apportioned at £5.11 IDs lOd.—Noted.
Mr Grigg was thanked for what he had done in regard to arranging for a local pound. Air Shaw had offered ground for a pound, and to act as poumlkeoper for £'o per annum.—liesolved that tho clerk consult the board’s solicitor in regal'd in what was necessary to Ive done in starting a pound. The monthly reports showed that in tli 3 North-east Harbor sub-division a quantity of rock had been quarried and used at various plnees on Beach mad, where pot holes were showing. AAater tales had been cleaned in this subdivision, and also in Pnrtnbcllo subdivision, where a good deai of patching had boon done. At Smith’s Bay potholes had been repaired. The bridge needed more planks to give better access to Burgess Hill. In Portnbello subdivision the men had been mainly employed in metalling the Lower Portobelio road.---Ilepori.fi approved.
