Dame Nellie Melba’s farewell performance at Covent Garden Theatre was an astonishing demonstration of her popularity. The King and Queen were present, and bad an enthusiastic reception. The house was sold out twenty minutes after the opening, and fancy prices were subsequently offered for tickets. An immense queue outside .commenced forming overnight, some waiting for thirty hours. There was a tremendous ovation and repeated recalls. At the conclusion, amid unsurpassed scenes of enthusiasm, the diva tearfully bade farewell to “ the dear, dear, great public.” Their Majesties sent a message to Melba in their own, handwriting thanking her for her beautiful and artistic singing, which they would remember with lasting enjoyment.—A. and N.Z.
