TAIERI ELECTORS

H.P.’S ENTERTAINED The local bodies of Taieri, as representing the electors, entertained Messrs T. K. Sidey and J. M. Dickson, M.P’s, in tho Borough Chambers. The Mayor of Moagial (Sir J. P. Walls) presided. He was supported by Messrs A. F. Quelch and Win. Allan (exmayors of the borough), Mr James Henderson ('deputy-mayor), and Cr J. W. Blair (chairman of the Taieri County Council). As the guests entered the council chamber the assemblage sang “ For they are jolly good fellows,” and tendered a _ most enthusiastic welcome. A fairly lengthy toast list, interspersed with songs, was honored. After the loyal toast had been honored, the mayor welcomed the guests in the name of ail assembled, and of the electors whom they represented. He said they had met, not to push the claims of the_ town and district, but to spend a social hour in friendship and to say a word of thanks to both members for what had been done for their respective districts. He referred in flattering terms to the esteem in which the guests were held by their constituents, and wished them a successful session. In responding to the toast. “ Our Guests,” Messrs Sidey and Dickson returned thanks for the honor accorded them, and promised to do their best—as in the past—for tho districts they represented. “ Our Schools ” was proposed by Mr John Logan in an excellent speech on education, and responded to by Messrs Rutherford, M'Lood, Johnson, Weddell, A. Mider, and other members of the school committees present; “The Public Sendee,” proposed by Mr A. F. Quelch, and responded to by Mr Chns. Findlay (Moagiel); “ Chairman of the Taieri County Council,” proposed by Cr Chas. Findlay (North Taieri); “The,Mayor of Mosgiel,” by Mr J. W. Blair; “ Mrs Sidey and Mrs Dickson,” by Mr John Wright, nan.; and “ Our Accompanist, Miss Walls.” by Mr A. F, Cheyne. Songs were rendered by Messrs B, Swailes, J. Crawford, Jas. Henderson, A. F. Cheyne, John Logan, and the chairman. "Mr Walter Blackie gave a recitation, and. Miss Walls presided at the piano. In addition to playing the accompaniments, she played two piano solos. ‘ Anld Lang Syne ’ closed the happy gathering.
