OTAGO PROVINCIAL COURT
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—-The Exhibition is now drawing to a close, and the matter of finding sufficient funds to meet the expenditure, so far as our Provincial Court is concerned, is looming larger than ever. It is not for the Court Committee to say whether tho display, so far as Otago is concerned, meets the standard aimed at when we first set out to do tho job. Otago is solid and prosperous, and wo conceived a display to portray these convincing characteristics without flamboyancy, and the executive believe they have accomplished that object. Now, sir, all this work requires tho expenditure of money, and wo, although conserving every penny, and always- watcheing to see that no waste, occurred, find outseves short considerably. As is generally known, the Otago and Southland Provincial Courts entered into an arrangement to raffle all the wall pictures in the combined courts, which cost ns in the vicinity of £3,000, with a view to assisting our funds, we being under tho impression that wo would bo tho only art union running during the Exhibition period, but we found otherwise. The district was Hooded by art unions with huge first prizes, whilst wo were compelled by law to limit our whole raffle to £SOO. The result is obvious.
Now, sir, we earnestly appeal to our supporters—in fact, to all those who desire to assist, to all those who believe in our province and its great future, to rally around us and purchase the tickets, or, if objecting to this procedure of raising money, to otherwise help. Tho raffle will he'drawn very shortly, nnd if the financial result is satisfactory it will take a good deal df worry off the minds of those men and women who worked so hard and earnestly to put Otago convincingly on the map.— I am, etc., S. B. Macdonald,
Treasurer, Otago Provincial Court. April 21.
