ENTERTAINED BY DIRECTORS LADIES' COMMITTEES AT AFTERNOBIT TEA “MORE REST ROOMS HEEDED IK CITY.” Tho ladies’ committees responsibloj'or tho organisation, control, and stalling of tho Women’s Rest Room, the Children’s Creche, and tho St. John Ambulance headquarters at Logan Park were entertained at afternoon tea yesterday by tho Exhibition directors. The Mayor (Mr H. L. Taplcy), speaking as a director, extended a hearty welcome to the guests, and, referring to tho valuable woik that had been done by each department, said that the work in the rest room and creche had boon so successful and beneficial to tho public that _ho did not want to see tho institutions go. It was probable that tho rest room would be placed in the Botanical Gardens, where it would ho greatly appreciated. “I would like,” he added, “to see more rest rooms in tho city, particularly in the central areas, and any appeal for such a purpose prill always have my sympathetic backing. There is no need to refer to tho world-wide and valuable work of tho St. John Ambulance Association—all know tho value of the headquarters in the Amusements Park and the noble service pcrfornied by tho workers there.” On behalf of the directors, he sincerely thanked the ladles for tho good work done by the several committees.

The Hon. R. Boyd (Commissioner for Fiji) expressed the great appreciation of the overseas and other commissioners for the great work that had been done by the ladies of the various societies represented. Ho thoroughly agreed -with all that the mayor had said, and was of the opiniotp that rest rooms wore needed in all cities. Dunedin was particularly well catered for in other allied respects, and bad more “breathing spaces”—gardens, parks, and recreation areas—than many other cities that ho had seen.

Miss 1. Fraser (president of tke Rest Room Committee), Dr Marion Whyte, and Miss J. Pollok (of the St. John Ambulance Brigade), and Mrs Macartney (president of the Children’s Creche Committee) briefly and suitably responded, Dr Why to stating that 1,000 sick people had been attended to at the Exhibition headquarters of the St, John Ambulance Brigade. RECEPTION TO POLICE REPRESENTATIVES, ETC.

In the evening the directors entertained representatives of the police, the railways, fire, post and telegraph, CustornSj Labor, Trades Council, and Tourist Department at, an enjoyable informal gathering in the official reception room. Amongst the guests present was Mr A. K. Harris, general superintendent of railway transport. The Chairman of Directors (Mr J. Sutherland Ross) expressed tho pleasure felt by his colleagues and himself at meeting the members of the public service who had helped to make tho Exhibition such an outstanding success. Every department had been a unit oJ that whole community effort that had assisted the directors to show what tho Empire could do in Dunedin. Mr C. Todd added his welcome, and Superintendent Mathieson (ol tho Police Department), Superintendent Napier (of tho Fire Brigade), and Mr H. P. West (railway traffic manager) replied on behalf of those present.
